Two Summer Combinations You’ll Actually Wear

I’ve been gravitating toward the same colour palette every summer for as long as I can remember — white, blue, green, yellow, and the occasional soft pink. Never saturated, always the lightest version of each. Not because I planned it that way, but because these are the shades that feel like summer to me. Light, clean, easy. When I put together these two looks, I wasn’t trying to create anything new. I was just doing what I always do: reaching for the pieces that make getting dressed feel effortless.

The Blue Shirt Moment

There’s something about an oversized button-down in a soft, washed-out blue that I keep coming back to. It’s one of those pieces that works harder than it looks. Worn loose over a black mini skirt, it has this relaxed confidence to it, not trying too hard, not underdressed either. The contrast between the soft shirt and the clean lines of the skirt is what makes the whole thing click.

For shoes I went with a flat sandal, something simple that doesn’t pull attention away from the shirt. It suits the energy of the look, easy, unfussy. Not the best choice for a long day on your feet, but for a short outing, a coffee run, a quick errand, it feels right. A Birkenstock works just as well here, maybe even better if you know you’ll be walking more than expected. A small dark bag keeps it grounded without adding bulk.

And sunglasses, I think people underestimate how much a good pair finishes a look. They’re not just an accessory, they’re part of the outfit. A sleek narrow frame or a subtle cat-eye shape works well here, something that doesn’t compete with the softness of the shirt.

The hair on this one is a sleek bun, pulled back, smooth, no pieces falling out. The sleek bun has been having a long moment and I understand why. It’s not just for when your hair starts to feel greasy on day three, though yes, that too. It genuinely elevates a simple outfit. There’s something almost architectural about it. It takes a casual combination and makes it feel considered.

The Jorts Combination

The longer denim short has fully earned its place back. The key is the length and the fit, not too tight, not too wide, hitting somewhere around the knee or just above. Light wash, slightly frayed at the hem. These details matter.

Paired with a white ribbed tank, this combination is almost aggressively simple. But that’s exactly the point. The tank is fitted, the shorts are relaxed, the proportions balance each other out in a way that feels naturally put together. A brown leather belt worn loosely through the loops adds just enough warmth and structure without making it feel overdone.

The bag here is a woven tote. Straw, rattan, something natural and a little textured. It brings in that summer quality that a regular leather bag just doesn’t have. Flat sandals again, something in a tan or warm brown that naturally ties in with the belt and the bag. In a combination this simple, footwear almost becomes secondary, everything is already so quiet that you don’t need to think too hard about it. A Birkenstock would fit just as naturally here too, especially if the day ends up being longer than planned.

Hair for this one can go either way. The sleek bun works just as well, but if you want something with a little more ease, a low loose bun or a simple low ponytail does the job. The idea is that your hair looks intentional without looking like you spent time on it. That’s the whole philosophy of both these looks.

Sunglasses here too. Something slightly sporty or retro, a wraparound or a classic aviator. Brown or gold tones in the frame tie in nicely with the belt and the bag.

One More Thing

One thing that ties both looks together without me even planning it is the jewellery. I have neutral to warm undertones so gold has always felt more natural on me than silver. In summer it gets even easier because once you have a bit of a tan, gold jewellery just makes sense without thinking about it. A delicate necklace, small hoops or studs, a thin bracelet or a watch. Nothing heavy, nothing overdone. There’s a warmth to gold that picks up the sun in a way silver doesn’t quite match. With both of these combinations I kept it minimal but present, enough to feel put together, not enough to feel overdressed.

Why These Two Work

Both looks are built on the same logic: neutral colours, clean silhouettes, nothing that competes with anything else. Every piece is doing something specific and nothing is there by accident, but none of it feels calculated. That balance is what I’m always chasing when I get dressed in summer.

I don’t own the exact pieces in these images and that’s kind of the whole point. You don’t need to. The blue of that shirt, the looseness of it, the way it sits over a simple skirt, that feeling is replicable. You find your version of it. White and blue have been in my wardrobe every summer for years because they’re just easy to live in. These combinations are a reminder that easy and stylish are not opposites. Sometimes they’re exactly the same thing.

Pack light, dress simply, walk like you know where you’re going.
